- ↑ Flight feathers are specific feathers on the wings and/or tail of a bird that allows it to fly, though some flightless birds also retain vestigial flight feathers. The flight feathers of certain species of bird, such as hummingbirds, also produce sounds like humming or whistling in flight; for other species, such as owls, their flight feathers instead disrupt the flow of air over their wings, allowing them to travel silently.
